About the Events
|
Time Attack is a new twist on one of the purest forms of motor sports: time trials. The phrase "time attack" has its roots in Japan, where the sport remains very popular to this day, and as is the case with many automotive trends (sport compact cars, drifting, etc.), time attack events migrated to the United States in 2004. Time Trial events have been held for well over 100 years, however, time trial just isn't as "sexy" as Time Attack.

The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) is in its 5th full season with its Time Trial Program. Last year, they had 10 NASA regions with full participation and one with partial participation, with over 725 drivers nationwide. For 2008, they expect to have full participation from our eleven NASA regions, with over one hundred eighty events nationwide. They will be having their third annual National Championship event at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course on September 11-14, where they will crown the National TT Champions.
NASA TT utilizes a car classification system that is easy to understand, and gives HPDE-4 drivers a taste of competition by allowing them to compete for top lap times, in open passing run sessions, against similarly prepared cars for awards, prizes, and recognition. In total, there are nine Time Trial classes, including one unlimited, two semi-unlimited, and six limited classes. Each region has its own Regional Championship Series that awards regional champions, and qualifies drivers to become eligible to compete at the NASA National Championships at Mid-Ohio. Awards are usually provided to our top-level finishers at each of the regional events.

Super Lap Battle is the ultimate test for a tuner, combining all areas of car setup. It is about getting the best setup of engine work, suspension/brakes, aerodynamics and wheels/tires to work in harmony to get the single fastest lap time possible. This event is a time trial based contest similar to most race organizations qualifying sessions. Cars go on track to compete for the fastest single lap time. The event started in April 2004 under the name Time Attack and was put together by the editors of Sport Compact Car and Super Street. The track of choice was to be Buttonwillow in the clockwise 13 configuration. This event for the first time was able to bring out the top tuners in the USA and Japan to compete on the road course. Signal Auto’s R34 GTR pulled off the fastest time of the day with a 1:54. Later in the same year we held another event in November where Sun Auto’s Cyber Evo driven by Tarzan Yamada set a long standing record of 1:48.906. The current record is held by Nobuteru Taniguchi in the HKS CT230R with a 1:43.523. |
